Sandy participated in ceremonial Brushes dances in Klamath and Up river. His Great-Great Grandma was Maggie Pilgrim, and Great-Grandma was Lydia Pilgrim-Sanderson. He danced with his cousins and was taught by his step-grandfather, Frank Gist Sr. Sandy worked at Pem-Mey Fuel Mart, and also was a Logger in the summer with his Father, Greg Johnson.

She was a highly respected Yurok language teacher and served on the NAGPRA & Culture committee for years & years. Her Yurok Language Conversation Book continues to inspire many Yuroks to take up learning our language.

Aileen was one of the last fluent speakers and a master teacher of the Yurok language. She spent over 60 years teaching her culture to all who wanted to learn. She was also a master basket weaver and singer of her native songs
